The Ladies of the Lake

When we refer to the 'Ladies of the Lake', we are normally refering to the Borromeo Islands, on the Gulf of Lago Maggiore. However on this occasion it is to record the recent visit of four wonderful ladies  from Hobart Tasmania, to celebrate their 'coming of age'.They have very kindly sent a few memorable photographs to add to our BLOG which convey the splendor of  Isola Bella and it's magnificent Baroque gardens.(Even in October,they are truly stunning)

The gardens which abound with every type of rare plant and flower, cover ten stepped terraces built in the shape of a cropped pyramid, and contain typical elements of Baroque gardens: pointed and rounded arches, ballustrades, obelisks,dramatic flights of steps, basins, fountains, waterfalls, and above all, statues.

Quando si parla delle 'signore del lago', ci si riferisce normalmente alle Borromee situate nel Golfo del Lago Maggiore...abbiamo avuto ospiti provenienti dalla Tasmania.

Essi ci hanno gentilmente inviato queste splendide fotografie da condividere con voi che passate a visitare il nostro blog.

I giardini delle isole Borromee sono di una bellezza eccezionale: vi sono coltivati tipi di piante e fiori.I famosi giardini a 'terrazze' costruiti uno sopra l'altro in scala a formare un insolita piramide,certamente ci ricordano uno stile barocco molto in voga a quei tempi.Predominano fontane, statue,obelischi,colonne e piccole cascate. La bellezza portata al massimo del suo splendore.

A fabulous display of Impatiens and Begonia, all the more remarkable with November almost upon us.

Una bellissima begonia, una fioritura insolita in questo periodo dell'anno...

The Cannas shown hear in orange, looks equally spectacular in yellow and as seen below contrast beautifully with the bright red begonia.

I colori del giallo e dell 'arancio...,spettacolare contrasto con il vivace rosso della begonia.

Originally the garden complex was designed(circa 1632) like a ship, symbolising the glory of the Borromeo family, from the lakeside it is like a floating wedding cake,which Carlo Borromeo dedicated to his wife, Isabella d' Adda, it took 40 years to complete, bringing all the soil from the mainland.The gardens are home to espaliered citrus fruit trees, once grown for the perfumed essences that could be extracted from them,rare old roses, jasmine, pomegranites and many exotic plants and trees: Camphor, tamarind, coffee,banana lotus flower, colourful water lillies and the Egyptian papyrus.

Camellias,rhododendrons, oleanders,azaleas and orchids bloom exuberantly in the fertile mild climate of the island, with the lake acting as an insulator,and citrus grown all year round.

One masterpiece of design, lies to the east side, where massive clipped hedges of holm oak, camellia, bay and holly produce dramatic blocks of green. Seen from the water as you come from Isola Madre, it hides all the flamboyant campness of the rest of the garden,but is not the least bit solemn in fact it's utterly, exhilaratingly serious. This is a baroque garden, as overblown and trumpeting as any other on this earth. It leaves you exhausted but smiling.

In origine il giardino dell 'Isola Bella fu disegnato con una forma che ricordava una nave, la nave simboleggiava, la gloria e potenza della famiglia Borromeo,dalla sponda a terra questa forma appare come enorme imponente 'torta di matrimonio', che Carlo Borromeo dedico' a sua moglie Isabella d' Adda. Ci vollero 40 anni per completarlo.

I giardini ospitano svariate piante di agrumi dalle quali venivano estratte le essenze, e innumerevoli rare piante di rose, gelsomino e melograno.Piante esotiche come tamarindo e banano, piante acquatiche e papiri egiziani.

Camelie,rododendri,oleandri,azalee,orchidee,tutte queste varietà di piante hanno una fioritura fantastica incentivate dal clima mite che carratterizza l' isola. Con il lago attorno e la posizione in pieno sole gli agrumi qui crescono tutto l'anno.

Il pezzo forte del disegno del giardino dell 'isola è sul lato est dove massicce parti di verde, camelia e quercia tagliati a regola d' arte regalano uno spettacolo talmente particolare da togliere il fiato.

E' un giardino barocco lussureggiante e imponente come pochi altri sulla terra.

Vi lascia sbalorditi e piacevolmente colpiti.
